Cows Creamery of P.E.I. earns world distinction

Avonlea clothbound cheddar wins super gold at World Cheese awards a in Birmingham, U.K.

Avonlea clothbound cheddar has won super gold at the World Cheese awards at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham, U.K.

The cheese, which is made in Prince Edward Island by Cows Creamery, was given top marks in its category of vintage cheddar and named one of the top 16 cheeses in the world.

This is the 28th year for the awards, and this year saw a record number of entries at 2,727 with cheeses travelling from around the globe to be judged. Over 250 cheese experts tasted the entries and whittled the list down to a top 16, which includes Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar.

“To receive this award is incredible,” says cheesemaker Armand Bernard. “It’s a real honour to have won world’s best vintage cheddar, especially when you consider the number of entries coming from all around the world.”

Taking top honours in its category awards Avonlea clothbound cheddar a "SuperGold" designation. Cows Creamery extra old cheddar was also recognized at the World Cheese Awards, receiving bronze in its category of ‘any creamery cheddar made on or before May 31, 2014 – sweet flavour.’

“Receiving this kind of recognition is incredible for us, but also for P.E.I. as a whole,” says Bernard. “The Island has really become known for high quality culinary offerings and we feel that this adds to that reputation.”

Avonlea clothbound cheddar is made with the milk of Island dairy cows, wrapped in cheesecloth and aged for 12-18 months under carefully monitored temperature and humidity.
