Demand is high for P.E.I. potatoes

The demand for P.E.I. potatoes is up this year according to Greg Donald, general manager of the P.E.I. Potato Board.

“If the movement we are seeing to all markets so far is any indication, we are optimistic that demand for Prince Edward Island Potatoes will continue to be strong throughout the shipping season,” says Donald.

He said the potatoes are appearing on supermarket shelves and restaurant menus across Canada and the northeastern United States.

At this point, movement of P.E.I. potatoes has increased to all markets, with significant increases in export activity to the United States and several Caribbean nations. Increasingly, he said, consumers are recognizing that the taste and quality of Prince Edward Island Potatoes makes them more than just any potato.

He said staff at the P.E.I. Potato Board routinely receive inquiries from as far away as Alberta and California from consumers looking to purchase P.E.I. potatoes in their local area. He said potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with essential nutrients while being versatile to prepare and cost-effective for any household food budget.

This fall and winter, television viewers can look for advertisements featuring Prince Edward Island potatoes on the Food Network Canada as part of a collaborative advertising program with the P.E.I. Culinary Alliance. Viewers can watch for a link to enter online for a chance to win grocery gift cards from P.E.I. potatoes.
