Providing treatment to Island youth hampered by drug and alcohol addiction will be a priority of the new Liberal government, says Premier-designate Robert Ghiz.
Ghiz said the Liberals urged the province for years to better address the problem. Earlier this year, Premier Pat Binns restated his plan to spend $1 million on a youth addiction centre.
The Tories were voted out of office last week and the Liberals didnt plan to waste time taking action on the issue.
It will be a priority of the incoming government to work on that fairly quickly, said Ghiz.
We will be exploring the best possible options.
He added that a strong push has been made for a youth addiction centre being established in Summerside. He noted, though, that services to assist youth battling alcohol and drug addictions need to be accessible across the province.
You talk to many families today parents their children are in a very dire situation, said Ghiz. You just have to sit around a table and listen to some of these support groups and you realize this is something that needs to happen very quickly.
Treating youth addiction must happen 'very quickly': Ghiz

I feel it is important to look at this. This is the only way we can prevent Youth Addiction. Yes we need other things but we do not want to loose our youth before they have a fighting chance.

We need a comprehensive program to address not only youth addiction, but the underlying socioeconomic stressors which are in part to blame for youth addictions. In other words we need to spend money, lots of money, Polar Foods-class money :-)

But Robert.... Why would you focus on something so trivial as youth addiction when you were in fact elected for a single purpose:
to lower gas taxes
C'mon, everybody in PEI wants to drive their big pickups all over the place (ie. to the liquor store to become addicted). We need the lower gas taxes so we can make the drive and buy more booze.
I think lower gas taxes is, like, so 20th century. We need it!
We don't need a better health care system with more doctors and specialists, better environment and ground water, better education system with shorter bus rides and smaller class sizes....
No! We need lower gas taxes.
:-)
