SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Make it three straight for Jennifer Jones at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Jones and Team Canada beat Prince Edward Island's Kathy O'Rourke 8-7 in 11 ends Sunday to win the title.
Jones scored one in the 11th to give her rink a fourth Scotties title overall.
"I never thought we would do it," Jones said. "To win three is incredible. The way we won today, the way we came back was awesome."
P.E.I. held a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh end before Team Canada battled back to take a 7-6 lead.
"Obviously we were disappointed with the way we were playing," Jones said. "We're a scrappy team and we never give up. We made big shots when we had to so we wanted to hang in there and make the shots to win. It just worked out well for us."
Jones stole a pair in the ninth end to take a 7-6 lead but P.E.I. scored one in the tenth end to force extra ends.
"Certainly we would have liked to make history and finish that off but we gave it our best and it just turned out to be a couple inches short today," said O'Rourke.
O'Rourke wouldn't go as far as to say that inexperience played a role in the loss.
"We missed the draw against the two (in the ninth end)," she said. "The girls got fooled a little bit on the sweep and it got to the fudge part faster than we thought. The weight was perfect and we weren't really sweeping that hard. All of a sudden it got to the centre line and it just stopped. I don't think it was nerves at all. That's what happens sometimes."
O'Rourke added that against top-notch competition like Team Canada, no lead was completely safe but the two teams stacked up well against each other.
"I don't know if I see much difference (between the two teams). We knew when we got up with the lead that it would never be enough against a good team like Jones' team," said O'Rourke. "I knew they would keep coming at us and keep fighting hard because that's what a really good team does."
Jones spoke highly of P.E.I.'s Erin Carmody, who threw skip rock for P.E.I. for the tournament.
"She played great," Jones said of the 21-year-old. "She's got a great future ahead of her. I'm sure we'll see them again. It was a great game today and it was a ton of fun to play and I'm sure they'll be back."
Jones became just the third skip to win the tournament three straight times - Colleen Jones and Vera Pezer were the others. Colleen Jones is the only skip to have won the tournament four straight times.
P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz said the entire province is proud of the O'Rourke rink's "magnificent performance" at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
"I know Islanders everywhere were cheering on the team of Kathy O'Rourke, Erin Carmody, Tricia Affleck, Geri-Lynn Ramsay and coach Al Ledgerwood," Ghiz said in a statement Sunday night.
"It was a remarkable performance and I was so impressed with the team's composure and ability to perform so well under pressure.
"Making it to the final was a major accomplishment on its own and I am certainly looking forward to the Island hosting the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts."

I agree with my old pal Petr....That was a great performance that turned non curling fans into fans. TSN had it out for PEI all week.....making it out to be a cinderella story, and that the team was just getting lucky....I guess you proved them wrong!!
Next year should be a great time! -

Way to go ladies! You may have lost the final game, but you won the tournament and the hearts of all Canadians! You were the talk of the town...even none curlers noticed and were rooting for you....I can't wait to go watch you in Charlottetown in 2011...make sure you stay together and win your provincial Scotties...Enjoy your time off..thank you for making the Scotties enjoyable...Cheers!

Good effort PEI. Some ridiculous comments on here, about PEI being in better shape and the officials not reading the measurement instruments correctly. Face it, they're a young team who team who let the pressure get to them. Looks like another World Championship for Jones (MB)!

I live in Sault Ste. Marie and watched them many times, including the final. They were the sweethearts of the Scotties and most people there were pulling for PEI.

Hey Bob from Summerside......wake up ya goof. O'Rourke was the one who kept Carmody together. And she didn't throw skip stones because she can't.....O'Rourke has more years curling experience than Carmody has been alive. Did you watch this tourny at all? Kathy skipped the team to take the pressure off Carmody calling the shots. This way Carmody retained her junior position of throwing skip stones without the pressure of skipping at a national event in a higher level that she is new to. Also O'Rourke made all her shots in the final. Get a grip Bob! I'm sick of all the praise for those young rookies . They had excellent help from two veterans!!! And they MADE HISTORY by making it in the final.....I wouldn't call that a CHOKE.
And it should have been an easy victory??? Playing against a repeating champ and world tourny player?
That being said ALL FOUR girls played awesome! O'Rourke, Carmody, Ramsey, and Affleck! Congrats you 4. I for one am very proud of ALL you guys!!! -

Choke. PEI had several chances to put the game away but kept giving it back to a mediocre Team Canada. Maybe they need a skip(O'Rourke) that could throw rocks instead of relying on the the mate(Carmody). When they made an unannounced time out in the 6th they looked like they just looked curled out and ready to go home. This could have been an easy victory but they blew it.
I was impressed by some of the shots made by Ramsay and Carmody, though. -

Now that it has been mentioned, I, too, wondered about the referee from Ontario. In all the other games that needed a measurement, the TV could see the meter. The Ref. also seemed a bit confused when they had to do the first measurement. Yes, Team Canada did get lucky. They have choked many times. Officer is on the team to break things up when they can't make a decent shot. Bet they don't make it passed the next tourney. I, too, was a little puzzled when so much was spoken of the other teams and so little of PEI.

The best rink lost that final game, and unfortunately in sports it can happen sometimes.
Clearly, mom O'Rourke and big sister Affleck were stabilizers for young Carmody and Ramsay who obviously can shoot lights out with the other women curlers in Canada -

I disagree that Canada was the better team. They were the luckier team because PEI outplayed them 75% of the game and had a few unfortunate moments in a few ends that unfortunately cost them. We are all so proud of all of you and being a young teram we are hopeful for more excitement from you in the years to come.

So exciting! PEI looked so calm in the game. They certainly were in much better shape than Team Canada. Being fit really helped their game throughout the week
I think 90% of Canada was cheering for them and it sounded like the crowd was also behind them...Congats! -

Could they not find an umpire anywhere in Ontario that can read the micrometer. That blind as a bat blonde lady screwed PEI out of a point in the first end, and a point in the playoff game against Canada. Great job by the girls, you deserved to win.

Good job by the PEI girls they played really well all week, however team canada was the better team, PEI was inconsistent all week and it showed in serveral games. You must make theses tough shots consistently if you want to win. Congrats again on a good week.

PEI has nothing to be ashamed of they played great during the entire tournament, and they have gained respect of the Country.
