Island wrestler claims gold medal

Charlottetown's Lis Williams scored a brilliant victory this past weekend, winning the gold medal in under-67 kilograms at the Pan American senior wrestling championships in Monterrey, Mexico.

Williams went undefeated in the event, finishing top of her pool after convincing wins over wrestlers from Mexico, Puerto Rico, El Salvador and the United States.
In her four bouts she allowed only two points to be scored on her, and her performance helped Canada to second overall in the team standings.
Williams is currently at Concordia University.
She recently finished thirrd at the senior national championships and second at the Canadian University Sport championships.
She is formerly of the Rikidokan Club in Charlottetown and coached both Veronica Keefe and Jillian Durant to medals at the 2009 Canada Summer Games on P.E.I.
Remaining events on her schedule for 2010 include the Canada Cup in July and the World University Games in Italy in October.

Organizations: Concordia University, Canadian University Sport, Rikidokan Club World University Games

Geographic location: Charlottetown, Canada, Mexico Monterrey Puerto Rico El Salvador United States Italy
