SOUTHWEST RIVER--An Islander will be paddling for a medal.
Kayaker Brady McKenna earned a berth in the five-team K-1 1,000M finals by finishing third in his heat (one of two for the K-1 1,000M event) Wednesday morning at the Canada Games Southwest River venue. His time placed him fourth overall.
Shortly afterwards Canada Games officials and coaches closed the course to further competition due to high winds.
McKenna said the cancellation will likely help his bid since it gives him time to rest up for the final, which will now be run Friday at 1:05 p.m.
"I have a good shot, but the Big Three are in the final, Ouebec, Ontario and Nova Scotia, and they should be pretty tough," said McKenna, who is competing in three other races.
