Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee said the city is thrilled with being officially named a gold level sponsor of the 2009 Canada Games.
The announcement was made Tuesday during the unveiling of two new tennis courts located in Victoria Park, which will be used during the Games.
"There are a wide range of benefits for signing on as a sponsor," said Lee.
"It's a tremendous opportunity for the city hosting the Games to draw attention to our venues. If the Games weren't being hosted here that golden opportunity to promote our city wouldn't be here."
As a gold level sponsor, the city has put $350,000 toward the Games which, according to Joseph Spriet, president of the 2009 Canada Games Host Society, has come as a huge bonus for the event.
"We're really happy to have the city onboard," he said.
"I started talking to Clifford back in 2007 about becoming a major sponsor of our Games at the $350,000 level, and we're just thrilled about it."
He added the tennis courts - which saw a number of renovations estimated at roughly $210,000, including the addition of two new courts, resurfacing all courts with Plexipave, relocating lighting to accommodate additional courts and adding new windscreens to the facility fencing - are also a boost for the Games.
"It's a legacy for Charlottetown, really," he said.
"And certainly an improvement to these courts."

- hey Where is Rural...

We have three kids and have been to CARI twice. Do you think that means we should pay taxes on that big corridor of a place? We live on forty acres and pay plenty of taxes, thank you. We deal with our sewage, water, and transportation ourselves.
There seems to be a notion on some urbanites minds that they are providing a lot to the surrounding communities and footing the bill. Thats an illusion on their part. The malls on the outskirts of town are well used, but thats not infrastructure. We havent been to downtown Charlottetown for at least two yearsand cant think of any reason to go therenot even to see the brass chairs or John A. on a bench. WE haven't been in Confed Mall for over a decade. We go to Halifax more than we go to downtown Chtown or Summerside. Charlottetown cant afford CARI or the track and Summerside cant afford CUP or the new Raceway. Thus the push to expand the boundaries of the tax grab.
And as for the Games, we are volunteering to do our part. -

- Where is Rural PEI Now??

I'd like to know where rural PEI is now? They seem to have something to say everytime Charlottetown GETS something. How its not about them. How its all about 'town'.
Where are they now? Where is THEIR contribution to the Canada Games? No doubt they will benefit from people travelling outside of town. No doubt their children will use the facilities. I'm pretty sure I've seen 'country folk' at the CARI center!!
Funny how when it comes to putting money up... they are pretty quiet.
