New UPEI Panthers women’s soccer coach preaches team work during first season at the helm

Graeme McDonald has an acronym for what he wants to see from his UPEI Panthers women’s soccer team.

CAP stands for commitment, attitude and performance.

“Those are the three things I am looking for,” the first-year Panthers coach said on Thursday. “If we perform well than the results take care of itself.”

The Panthers begin the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) season tonight at 5 p.m. at Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S.

The team is coming off a good training camp, including wins over Moncton and Holland College in exhibition games at home last weekend during the Mulligan Cup.

McDonald said the girls have worked hard and he is looking forward to the upcoming season.

The Panthers have a veteran squad back this season.

It includes keeper Ashley McKenna and striker Maria Scichilone, who are both in their fourth year, while midfielder Sarah Stanley is in her fifth season and is the reigning UPEI female athlete of the year. Stanley and Scichilone were both second-team all-conference players last season.

McDonald said those three players are key as are the rest of the veterans to lead the young players. But, he said, UPEI needs contributions from its entire roster to get be victorious.

“I want to make it more of a team game,” he said. “They all have a part to play for us to be successful.”

Emilie Pelletier, a striker from Fredericton entering her fourth season, led the Panthers in goals in 2013 with four tallies in 13 games.

The Panthers finished fourth in the AUS regular season in 2013 before losing 1-0 to the Cape Breton Capers in the semifinal.

UPEI plays its first game at home Sunday at 1 p.m. when Moncton comes to town.
