Nova Scotia teams improved to 2-0 Friday at the Bell Aliant Atlantic Under-14 All-Star Soccer Championships in Charlottetown.
The Nova Scotia girls defeated Prince Edward Island 2-0. Mae Batherson scored in the 14th minute and Jenna Burrows in the 67th minute for the victory.
Haley Kardas and Hannah Allen shared the shutout.
The Nova Scotia boys defeated P.E.I. 4-1.
Nova Scotia’s Tyler Webster opened the scoring in the 26th minute before Simon Bitar converted a penalty kick to tie the contest before the halftime break.
Nova Scotia took control of the match in the second half with goals from Ayoub Al-Arabi in the 46th minute and Brandan Richards in the 60th minute. An own goal a minute later completed the scoring.
The losses drop the Island squads to 1-1 in the competition.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s team earned its first victories of the championships by defeating New Brunswick.
The boys won 3-1 while the girls were victorious 1-0. New Brunswick teams fell to 0-2 in the championship, but still have a chance to get into Sunday’s gold medal games.
In the boys’ conteste, Liam Santuccione gave Newfoundland and Labrador the lead eight minutes in and Dylan Arsenault-McGraw tied the game with a minute remaining in the half.
Aaron Greenham got the winner in the 65th minute and Logan Strickland added an insurance marker with five minutes left in the game.
Emma Druken recorded the shutout in the girls’ game with Kristen Jenkins scoring the lone goal in the 61st minute.
Organizers altered today’s schedule due to the pending storm.
Prince Edward Island will play New Brunswick at 8 a.m. (girls) and 9:45 a.m. (boys) at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.
Newfoundland and Labrador will play Nova Scotia at 8 a.m. (girls) and 9:45 p.m. (boys) at UPEI.
Sunday’s schedule will see the bronze medal games at 8 a.m. (girls) and 10 a.m. (boys) and the gold medal games at noon (girls) and 2 p.m. (boys).
At the under-13 championships being held in Conception Bay South, N.L., the Island boys and girls had another rough day against tough Nova Scotia opposition.
The girls lost 7-1 to fall to 0-1-1 and the boys lost 7-0 to fall to 0-2.
P.E.I. plays New Brunswick today at 11:30 a.m. (girls) and 3:30 p.m. (boys) Atlantic.
The gold and bronze medal games are scheduled for Sunday.
