The McCain New Brunswick Premier Soccer League’s past two champions will meet today in Charlottetown.
SoccerStop P.E.I. F.C., who won the league in 2012, hosts the defending champion Fredericton Wanderers at 2 p.m. The teams play Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games are at UPEI.
“It’s a big weekend coming up because we’re playing the Wanderers,” said P.E.I. F.C.’s Jared Murphy.
The Island squad is coming off two lopsided victories over Fundy United two weeks ago in their first games of the season. Murphy said it was a good start for the team, but they know they will have to be better this weekend against Fredericton.
“We’re going in there with one goal in mind, and that’s to win both games this weekend,” he said.
“I don’t think anything tactically has to be changed,” Murphy added.
“We’ll start out the same way we did against Fundy . . . if it doesn’t work, we’ll make adjustments.”
P.E.I. F.C. (2-0) and Fundy United (0-2) are the only teams with records in the league standings after F.C. Chaleur dropped out last weekend. Chaleur’s two losses, including a 3-0 defeat to the Wanderers, were removed from the standings. The remaining five teams will play a 16-game schedule.
This weekend’s home games are important, as it is their last home game until June 20. The team hits the road for the next three contests.
P.E.I. F.C. is expected to have a full lineup again today. It proved valuable two weeks ago against Fundy, which only had 11 players.
“When you get up a few goals and you have eight guys ready to play on the bench . . . that’s a lot easier on the legs than having 11 players and playing a full game two days in a row,” Murphy said.
The team has been getting as many touches as possible during practices the past two weeks, playing short-sided games and getting its legs ready for the game.
