The Holland College Hurricanes will look to earn a spot in Sunday’s Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association soccer finals today in Cornwall.
The fourth-ranked women’s Hurricanes (5-4-3) play the top-seeded University of King’s College Blue Devils (9-0-3) at 12:15 p.m. Kings defeated Holland College 2-0 on Sept. 8 and the teams played to a 2-2 tie on Sept. 29.
The second-place men’s Hurricanes (6-1-5) play the third-ranked Blue Devils (7-3-2) at 4:45 p.m. The team tied both of their game during the regular season.
The other semifinals have Mount Saint Vincent Mystics (8-2-2) and St. Thomas University Tommies (7-3-2) in women’s play at 10 a.m. and the Mystics (7-1-4) and the UNBSJ Seawolves (4-2-6) at 2:30 p.m.
The finals are Sunday at noon (women) and 2:30 p.m. (men). All games are at the Terry Fox Sports Complex. Admission to all games is $5 per person while Holland College students and kids in Grade 12 or younger receive free admission.
The Seawolves are hosting the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s championships while the women’s event is in Surrey, B.C. Both events begin on Nov. 6.
King’s Monique Comeau and UNBSJ’s Mackenzie Tamblyn were named players of the year Friday night as the league handed out its yearend awards.
The rookies of the year are Adele Van Wyk and Gareth Imrie, both of King’s.
Danielle Cyr received the Gerry LeBlanc Award and Tyler Simmonds the Bob Coe Award, which are presented annually to athletes who combine the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, enthusiasm and ability, both on and off the field. Both recipients are from Mount Saint Vincent.
The coaches of the year awards went to King’s Gary Carter (women) Mount Saint Vincent’s Luke Corey (men).
