SUMMERSIDE – It was ‘Playoff Thursday’ for the P.E.I. School Athletic Association midget soccer leagues.
The AA and A leagues held semifinal games to determine the matchups for the provincial gold- and bronze-medal game matches on Saturday.
It was a good day for the Summerside Intermediate School Owls, who advanced to both the boys and girls’ AA championship games. The girls edged the East Wiltshire Warriors 3-1 and will take on Stonepark, which got by M.E. Callaghan 2-1.
On the boys’ side, the Owls needed overtime to get by the Queen Charlotte Coyotes 2-1 while Stonepark defeated Hernewood in the other semifinal. The score of that game is unavailable.
In A girls, the Athena Hawks topped Souris 6-1 and Birchwood edged Kinkora 2-1.
The Athena boys did not enjoy the same result as the girls, falling 2-0 to Souris. Montague blanked Evangeline 4-0 in the other boys’ semifinal.
The medal games will be played Saturday at UPEI in Charlottetown and Eric Johnston Field in Summerside. A schedule will be released on Friday.
Following are recaps of the semifinals:
Summerside Intermediate 3
East Wiltshire 1
The Owls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, and never looked back en route to defeating East Wiltshire.
Kate Steele scored three minutes in, and Georgia Baker scored her first of two goals halfway through the first half to put the game out of reach.
Chantelle MacPhail’s second-half goal spoiled the shutout of Owls keeper Bethany Dickson.
Niko Coady play a strong game in nets for East Wiltshire.
Stonepark 2 M.E. Callaghan 1
Maddy Hurley and Ellie Langston scored for Stonepark, and Rickilee MacLeod answered for Callaghan.
All of the game’s scoring took place in the second half.
Summerside Intermediate 2
Queen Charlotte 1 (OT)
Noah Dobson scored in overtime to give the Owls the win.
The Owls scored early in the game on a goal by Taylor Reid, and then went into a defensive shell in the second half.
Keir Warren scored a beautiful goal on a long strike to tie the game 1-1 with only minutes to left in regulation time.
Both keepers – Queen Charlotte’s Alex Campbell and the Owls’ Parker Cameron – turned in strong performances.
Souris 2 Athena 0
Athena had the wind at their backs for the first half, but they had trouble trying to solve the Souris defence.
The Spartans struck first in the 21st minute as Ed Jenkins found the back of the net. Jenkins repeated that effort 12 minutes later to put Souris up two going into halftime.
The Hawks pulled out all their tricks, but were unable to score against Souris keeper Riley Flynn.
Hawks keeper Morgan Crosman played well in the second half.
Montague 4 Evangeline 0
With Montague winning the toss and opting to take the wind, most of the first half was played in Evangeline's end.
Matt Quinn scored the opening goal at the 16-minute mark. Donovan Bears then scored back-to-back goals at the 32- and 35-minute marks to give Montague a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The wind still was present in the second half, but was not as much of a factor as Montague controlled the ball 70 per cent of the time.
Trey Van Colen tracked down an errant pass and, from the goal-line, was able to curl the ball back off the far post and slowly roll it over the line in the 57th minute.
The cleanly-played game featured lots of chances at both ends.
Athena 6 Souris 1
Kaleigh Clow started off the scoring with a shot from the top of the box to put Athena in front. Taylor Gillis had a four-goal effort to lead Athena, and Nikki Arsenault added the other.
Emma Dixon scored for the Spartans in the opening half.
Winning keeper was Emily Steele.
Birchwood 2 Kinkora 1
In a hard-fought battle, the Birchwood Cobras came out on top against Kinkora.
Taylor MacDougall scored both goals for the Cobras – one from a free kick and one was from a field cross-over by Hailey Murphy.
Kinkora’s scorer is unavailable.
