Soccer teams host final regular season home game Wednesday night
The Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s soccer teams will complete their regular season home schedule Wednesday when they host the Crandall University Chargers at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall.
Game times are 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men).
The women’s team (4-3-2) currently sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association league standings. The top four teams will qualify for league championships hosted by Holland College on Oct. 25th and 26th.
“With three games remaining we need to be focused and play to our potential,” said head coach Kris McKinnon. “Playing three high-quality teams heading into the playoffs will be good for us after the Thanksgiving break.”
In the previous matchup between these two teams, the Hurricanes defeated the Chargers 7-1 in Moncton on Sept. 15. The Chargers enter today’s game with a 0-9 record.
The men (3-1-5) sit in fifth place and knows every game counts if they want to qualify for the league championships. They sit just one point behind both the St. Thomas Tommies and UNBSJ Seawolves.
The Hurricanes sneaked out a late-goal victory when Joel Dennis scored late in the game in the previous contest with Crandall. The Chargers enter the game with a 2-7-1 record and sit in sixth place.
“Last game versus Crandall we created many scoring opportunities,” said head coach Jonathan Vos. “We will look to do the same and take our chances. Our flank play and being patient will be our focus.”
Following today’s games the Hurricanes will each play two more times before the regular season draws to a close. This weekend the Hurricanes visit the Tommies on Saturday before travelling to Saint John, N.B. to take on the Seawolves on Sunday.
