Josh Egan scored twice Wednesday as the Churchill Trout captured the Barna Cup in the Prince Edward Island senior men’s premier soccer division.
The Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers Soccer Club team defeated Mussels & Bubbles from the Summerside United Soccer Club 3-2 in the final.
Keepers Greg McGuire and Ryan Tremere kept the game scoreless through a closely played first half. The second half proved different as both teams started looking for the winning goal.
The Trout got on the scoreboard 18 minutes into the second half off a header from Egan from close range. The Summerside squad replied three minutes later when Adam Hornyik scored off a header from a corner kick.
Egan notched his second of the game, again using his height advantage to head home the marker, from a perfectly delivered free kick from Peter Conaughton. Trout went ahead 3-1 in the 37th minute when Brodie Carter finished on a hard, low shot off a corner kick.
With only minutes left to force extra time, the Summerside team pushed players forward looking for goals. The pressure paid off when Dylan Bernard tap in a rebound from a long-range shot.
The final few minutes saw Summerside continue the pressure and give Hornyik a shot from close range only to see it sail over the bar. Danny Craig and Chris Deldersfield, with solid defence throughout the game, shut down the Summerside attack for the last minute to help secure the title.
