To begin the season the UPEI Wave Athlete of the week awards go to soccer players Chelsie McInnis and Dillon Wight.

Top female athlete

Women’s soccer fifth-year striker Chelsie McInnis is this week’s Wave UPEI female athlete of the week.

McInnis scored both of the winning goals on the weekend vs. Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s. With the wins the 10th-ranked UPEI Panthers sit in first place of the AUS standings with six points.

McInnis is a Summerside native and a business administration student at UPEI.

Top male athlete

The Wave Male Athlete of the Week is Dillion Wight of the men’s soccer team.

In the first game against Dalhousie, he switched left back to centre back and played consistent defence during the full 90-minute matchup in the new position. On Sunday, Wight was moved this time to right fullback in order to match up with SMU’s top offensive player and was outstanding.

Wight is a third-year science student from Charlottetown.

Next up

The soccer Panthers are on the road again this weekend for a single game Sunday afternoon at Mount Allison at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and play their home openers on Sept. 24 when they host UdeM.
