Islanders need to kick in a lot more support if a local soccer team hopes to net a major national prize.
To win the grand prize of $125,000 in upgrades to a local soccer pitch, the Central Queens Clippers need to garner the most votes in a BMO Team of the Week contest put on by the Bank of Montreal.
The unofficial vote tally with eight days to go does not look promising for the under-12 girls' soccer team from Hunter River.
As of mid-day Monday, the team was sitting in sixth spot with 7,370 votes, well back of the contest frontrunners from Quebec who have garnered more than 20,000 votes.
The BMO site cautions that the results displayed are unofficial. All votes are subject to validation in accordance with the rules.
Still, the margin, official or not, is sizeable for the Central Queens Clippers squad.
To vote, visit www.bmosoccer.com and follow the appropriate links.
Voting runs until Aug. 15 with the winning team to be announced Aug. 22 on Canada AM.
Each e-mail address is entitled to one vote per day during the time allotted.
If the Clippers win the contest's grand prize, they will not only win $125,000 towards soccer field upgrading but also a team trip to a Major League Soccer game featuring either the Toronto FC or Vancouver Whitecaps and $5,000 towards a charity of the club's choice.
Plans are already in place to put the potential winnings to good use on the six soccer fields at the Elmer G. MacDonald Soccer Complex.

Why does there have to be something in it for your team. Can't you just support the only Island team in it! By the way, this isn't my local association...but I am voting for them everyday. Good Luck Clippers!
