SUMMERSIDE - Charlottetown's Jerry Muzika will be the latest from the sport of curling to be inducted into the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame when it holds its annual inductions Saturday night at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.
Muzika's passion and love for the sport has won him many friends in the province.
Born in Saskatchewan, he came to P.E.I. in 1971 already an established curler and in 1974, he was on fellow Hall of Famer Bob Dillon's team as they won the provincial championship, going on to the Brier in London, Ont.
Muzika made two further national appearances at the seniors - in 1990 with Boyd White and again with Dillon in 1993.
It was as an administrator, however, that he has made the most contribution - starting with positions at the Charlottetown Curling Club, he worked his way up to become provincial president, before taking on important roles with the national body.
From 1982-1988, Muzika held most of the key positions in Canadian curling, including president from 1986-87.
He also served on many organizing committees on major events and in addition he has played an important role with the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and Museum through the years, serving three terms as president.
Muzika's interest in the history of the sport has seen him chronicle the story of curling in the province and he achieved his ambition of setting up the P.E.I. Curling Hall of Fame, with the first inductions taking place in 2007.
Through the years he has always championed the successes of others and his research has resulted in many of Muzika's nominations becoming inducted members of the P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame.
A life member of the Charlottetown Club and the Canadian Curling Association, as well as a member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame to which he was inducted in 1989, Muzika received another of the sport's highest honours in 2003, when he was inducted into the prestigious Governor General's Curling Club, recognizing those who have contributed to the growth and promotion of curling in Canada, and elsewhere.
Tickets are still available from Nick Murray at Sport P.E.I. at 368-4547, or from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.
