The UPEI Panthers women’s soccer team won its two exhibition games during the weekend in the Mulligan Cup.
The Panthers defeated the Holland College Hurricanes 1-0 on Saturday with Melissa Richardson scoring the lone goal. On Sunday they defeated Moncton 2-0 behind goals by Emilie Pelletier and Maria Scichilone.
The men’s team went 2-1 during the Mulligan Cup.
UPEI lost 3-1 to P.E.I. F.C. on Friday before defeating Holland College 2-1 on Saturday and Moncton 2-0 on Sunday.
James Mallard scored UPEI’s goals on Friday while Brett Hogan and Cole MacMillan found the back of the net on Saturday. Mallard and MacMillan scored on Sunday.
The Panthers open the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) play on Friday in Wolfville, N.S., against Acadia. The women play at 5 p.m. and the men at 7:15 p.m.
The Panthers’ home opener is Sunday with games at 1 p.m. (women) and 3:15 p.m. (men).
UPEI’s rugby team went 1-2 during the Truro invitational tournament.
They lost 34-0 to Acadia and 20-0 to St. F.X. while defeating Dalhousie 20-0. Rebecca Chapman, Holly Hartlen and Amy Andrews were the Panthers’ players of the games.
The Panthers host Acadia on Saturday at 2 p.m. to start the AUS season.
The Panthers field hockey team went 2-2 last week, during a trip to Maine.
They beat Thomas College (Waterville) 8-0 behind Ashley Hollis’ three goals. Singles went to Haley Grimmer, Mikaela McGuirk, Sydney Stavert, Danielle LeClair and Lacey MacLauchlan.
They also won 5-0 over Husson University. Stavert and Hollis each scored twice while Grimmer rounded out the scoring.
The Panthers lost 8-0 to the University Maine in Orono and
2-1 to St. Joseph’s College of Maine. Alyssa Ferguson scored UPEI’s goal against St. Joseph’s.
The Panthers start play against the other Atlantic universities with a tournament in Halifax on Sept. 20 and 21.
