Lakehead Timberwolves’ head coach Scott Morrison talks to his players during a timeout in a recent Ontario University Athletics men’s basketball game in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Morell native Scott Morrison is moving on as Lakehead University men’s basketball head coach to take the head coaching job with the NBA Development League’s Maine Red Claws, the affiliate of the Boston Celtics.

Morrison worked as an assistant and scout with the Red Claws, based in Portland, Maine, for the 2013-14 season.

In 10 years as Thunderwolves’ bench boss, Morrison went 185-174, winning the Ontario University Athletics men’s basketball championship in 2012 and finished second to the Carleton Ravens in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s basketball championship in 2013.

“Words cannot express the extreme gratitude I have in my heart for the entire Lakehead University community and especially our close knit family within the Thunderwolves athletics department. Not only did they provide me the best possible environment to succeed as a basketball coach, but also supported me to a fault the entire way,” said Morrison, a UPEI grad and a three-time CIS academic all-Canadian, on Friday.  “ . . . it’s a major step in the direction of a place I have dreamed of since I was a small child getting buckets in the Morell High School gym. I’m excited for the new challenges as well as the chance to walk the same court as some of the greatest players and coaches of all time. I hope that the players, assistant coaches and supporters who have been dedicated to our cause here at LU will understand the decision I’ve made and root for me to succeed at the next level, much like I will be cheering them on for years to come.”

Morrison replaces Mike Taylor, who was fired after two seasons, a 45-55 record and one playoff appearance.

The new Lakehead head coach is Manny Furtado, an assistant with the CIS champion Carleton Ravens for the past two seasons.
