The Island Storm signed power forward DaVon Haynes to bolster its front line for the 2014-15 National Basketball League of Canada season.
Haynes, a six-foot, eight-inch Detroit, Mich., native, played last season at Arkansas Pine Bluff University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference where he was twice named to all-SWAC second team.
Haynes 23, averaged over 12 points per game in 2013-14 at Arkansas Pine Bluff while grabbing six rebounds per game and shooting 50 per cent from the floor.
Joe Salerno, Storm head coach, scouted Haynes while he played for the Storm team at the Global Basketball International Summer League tournament earlier this year in Las Vegas, Nev.
Haynes averaged almost 23 points per game and was named a tournament first-team all-star.
"DaVon is an extremely exciting young player. He has the ability to score both from the paint as well as the perimeter. He was one of the top players at the Global Basketball International Summer League in Las Vegas and drew a lot of attention, so we were thrilled when he agreed to play for us this season," said Salerno in a release. "He has unlimited athletic ability and a skill set that allows him to play and defend multiple positions. I think DaVon could be one of the most exciting rookie's in the NBL this season."
The Storm's summer basketball camps continue at Westisle High School in Elmsdale this week while other camps are planned for Aug. 11 to 14 at Morell High School in Morell, and Aug. 18 to 21 at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside.
Camps are free and space is still available at all three camp locations.
