Shanks finishes first, Locke and Wilson tie for second
Holland College Hurricane golfers Justin Shanks, Eric Locke and Brett Wilson finished first and tied for second, respectively, at the RBC Dominion Securities New Brunswick men’s amateur golf championships recently in Sussex, N.B.
Shanks, a Sussex native, shot a one-under par 71 in the final round and an even-par 288 during the four-round championship.
“Competing with Brett and Eric was fun and we enjoyed the round,” he said. “It definitely took away some of the nerves. I knew if I didn’t win that I wanted one of them to take the title."
The fairy tale finish saw the three in the final group on Sunday.
“I couldn’t ask for better way for this tournament to turn out. Getting to play with my two best friends for the last two days was great,” Shanks said.
Locke, of Digby N.S., and Wilson, also a Sussex native, finished tied at two-over par 290 after four rounds.
During two seasons with the Hurricanes, the three won two Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association individual titles (Wilson in 2013 and Locke in 2014) and two team championships, and competed at three national championships as members of the Hurricanes men’s team, garnering top 10 finishes in all three events.
Shanks, Wilson and Locke recently graduated from the school's golf club management program. Shanks and Wilson are returning in the fall to complete their professional golf management program.
“Justin has worked so hard on his game and he deserves the recognition that comes with such a substantial achievement,” said Albert Roche, athletic and recreation director at Holland College. “Having Justin, Eric and Brett perform so well is gratifying. However, the bigger lesson here is appreciating how supportive they are of each other and their strong bond as teammates and friends.”
