The Charlottetown John Brown Grille Fawcetts are hosting their final tournament this weekend before welcoming the country’s best fastball players at the end of August.
Action begins tonight at 7 p.m. at City Diamond when the Fawcetts play the Coors Cardinals masters team. The four-team tournament concludes Sunday at 2 p.m.
“If you want to be prepared for the last weekend in August, you have to work now,” first baseman Mark Arsenault said Thursday.
Joining the Fawcetts and Cardinals this weekend will be the Summerside Chrysler Dodge Eagles and the East Hants Mastadons.
The Cardinals are the host team for the Canadian senior masters tournament being held in Charlottetown in conjunction with the senior men’s nationals.
The Fawcetts went 1-2 in Quebec last weekend, including an opening game loss to the New York Gremlins, the second-ranked team in the world. Arsenault said he thinks the team fell behind mentally before stepping onto the field based on the competition.
“That’s usually not how we prepare. Usually the better the team, the better we play,” he said.
Charlottetown gave up 10 runs in the first inning in losing the second game, but outscored Ottawa the rest of the way and defeated Napanee, Ont., to complete the tournament.
“After the first inning of the second game, we were a totally different team the rest of the weekend,” Arsenault said. “Pride kicked in.”
Charlottetown has added a strong contingent of import players for nationals, but those players are not expected to suit up with the Fawcetts until the Canadian championship.
Arsenault said they are all good team guys who will fit in and bringing them in earlier in the summer would mean less chances for Island players.
“It’s important for us to get our guys reps,” Arsenault said. “We’re not only trying to win at nationals here, we’re trying to develop a men’s program into the future.”
The Fawcetts are in a tournament next weekend in North River, N.S., with East Hants, Indian Brook and the Halifax Pepperjacks.
The Canadian senior men’s fastball tournament will take place Aug. 26 to 31 while the masters tournament is set for Aug. 29 to 31.
Both tournaments will be played at Central fields.
