The Holland College Hurricanes women's soccer and volleyball teams have a new recruit after Kensington native Hannah Oatway signed on to both squads for the 2014-2015 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association season.
On the soccer field, Oatway attended the 2013 club nationals in St. John’s, N.L., with Sherwood under-18 women, and was a member of Team P.E.I. at the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que.
Oatway helped the Kensington Intermediate Senior High women's volleyball squad win a P.E.I. School Athletic Association silver medal last season, attended the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence program in 2013-2014 and earned several all-star and MVP awards in high school and club competition for her efforts.
“I’m very excited to be joining the Hurricanes soccer and volleyball teams in the fall. Sports have been a very important part of my high school experience and I am looking forward to being playing at the next level in college,” said
Oatway, who's enrolled in the early childhood care and education program. “My personal goals for next season are to balance athletics and academics, play my best and to use every chance to learn and improve as a player.”
Kris McKinnon, head coach of the women’s soccer Hurricanes, is glad to have Oatway in his lineup for this season.
“Adding a player of Hannah's ability to our program is a huge plus. Having competed at the 2013 Canada Games she has gained valuable experience that will help her in the ACAA and boost our program as we challenge for another ACAA title," said MacKinnon.
And Lori-Beth Dwyer, women’s volleyball head coach, has similar thoughts.
“Having coached Hannah through the Volleyball Centre of Excellence, I am thrilled to have her join our team. She is a versatile player who will bring a lot of energy to the floor,” said Dwyer.
