Kaillie Humphries, left, and Heather Moyse celebrate with the second- and third-place U.S. teams during the flower presentations Wednesday during the Sochi Olympics.

SUMMERSIDE — Somebody taped a lucky loonie to the back of the projector screen at Credit Union Place Tuesday.

Did the extra bit of luck push Summerside’s Heather Moyse and partner Kaillie Humphries to victory?

Probably not, says the culprit, but it’s nice to think that maybe it did.

“It was all her — maybe this was a little push — but it was all Heather. My legs are still shaking,” gushed Karen Goodwin, moments after Moyse and Humphries claimed their second straight Olympic gold medal in women’s bobsled at the Sochi Games.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered in the CUP’s foyer to cheer on the women and watch on the big screen. They put on a good show, clawing back from the smallest of margins to eek out a win over United States 1 sled, piloted by Elana Meyers and braked by Lauryn Williams.

By the time Moyse, brakewoman, and Humphries, sled pilot, started their fourth and final run down that track in Sochi, Russia, the tension in the room was palpable. Nails were bitten, eyes were hidden behind hands and knuckles were white on “go Heather go” signs.

As the U.S 1 sled ran into difficulty on its fourth and final run, and the announcers declared Moyse and Humphries to be the winners, the floodgates opened and the crowd went wild.

“She did it,” somebody yelled, amongst the cheers and flag waving.

Even after the uproar died down and the spectators started to disperse it was hard not to spot a smiling face.

“I can stop shivering now,” said Hannah Brown. “I thought it was great. I’m so excited. It’s really great for Summerside to have someone in the Olympics who wins and who just brings up all of our spirits,” she said.

It was also just nice to make it a group experience, added her companion, Jeremy Wheeler.

“I thought it was really awesome. Really exciting. It was my first time being with a group of people watching an Olympic event, so the atmosphere was great. I almost teared up a bit there at the end,” he said.

Muriel Brown said she can’t wait until Moyse brings her new medal to Summerside.

“Everybody knows her and what a beautiful person she is already. Just knowing her makes us all really proud,” she said.
