Halifax’s Ellie Black to perform during the Prince Edward Classic this weekend

The Island Gymnastics Academy will host more than 500 participants at the Prince Edward Classic from Friday to Sunday.

“This competition is the premiere invitational competition for our region and an important qualifier for our provincial teams,” said meet director Lea Rand.

The top athletes from across Atlantic Canada will compete for a spot on their provincial teams during the competition at the Delta.

Olympian Ellie Black from Halifax will be performing in the Saturday evening session, testing her routines in preparation for her upcoming international competitions.

Japanese gymnast Koji Masui will also be competing in the senior men’s category on Saturday night.

Masui was a top competitor for Chyuko University prior to moving to Nova Scotia where he trains and coaches.

Island athletes who qualify at this competition have the opportunity to compete later in the season at regional and national championships.

Island Gymnastics Academy has hosted this competition annually for the last 18 years and it is the largest of its kind east of Montreal.

The event is open to the public providing Island gymnasts the opportunity to showcase their talents for a hometown crowd.

The Saturday evening session, which begins at

4 p.m., will feature the national-level athletes and organizers said it promises to be an exciting competition.
