The UPEI Panthers are in for a rare doubleheader today in exhibition basketball tournament action in Halifax.
The Panthers play the St. F.X. X-Women and the host Mount Saint Vincent Mystics at the Dyrick McDermott invitational tournament.
âWeâre going in with the idea weâre going to play a lot of bodies anyway, so it shouldnât be a big deal,â coach Greg Gould said.
The Panthers, who left Thursday afternoon due to the forecasted storm, will have at least 14 healthy bodies for the weekend.
The team has been practising since Dec. 28 in an effort to get in game shape for the regular season resuming on Jan. 10.
âI donât think you can simulate game conditioning in practice,â Gould said.
âLast year we found that we came back, we practiced hard . . . but when we went to Acadia and opened up in league play, it just wasnât the same.â
The exhibition play provides the players a chance to get their timing back and their legs under them before the crunch of the second semester begins.
âFor me, itâs an opportunity to maybe see some players who didnât get a lot of playing time in the first semester,â Gould said.
The four-team, three-day tournament is a round robin with the championship game on Sunday. Lakeland College from Alberta is also taking part.
The Panthers split their first eight games and sit in fourth place in the eight-team Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference with eight points.
They return to league action Friday, Jan. 10, when they host the second-place Cape Breton Capers (4-3) at 6 p.m. in a four-point game.
The Capers won 82-70 on Nov. 29 in Sydney, N.S., in the only other game this season.
