Panthers, Hurricanes to host high school basketball tourney

The UPEI Panthers and Holland College Hurricanes men’s basketball teams will co-host the

inaugural Maritime Challenge High School Boys Basketball Classic in Charlottetown from Dec. 20 to 21.

The six-team tournament features Colonel Gray and Charlottetown Rural, and off-Island high school teams Fredericton, Citadel, Leo Hayes and Dartmouth.

Play runs Friday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 21, at 9 a.m. at Holland College and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at UPEI.

“We are excited to host some of the best high school basketball teams in the region at this first annual tournament, with our partner Holland College,” said Tim Kendrick, head coach of the UPEI men’s team.

Admission is $5 per day for adults and non-UPEI or Holland College students. Kids under-12 are free.

Preceding the tournament, the UPEI and Holland College men's teams will play an exhibition game at 8 p.m. at  UPEI.

“We have six of the top high school basketball programs in the Maritimes competing in this event and I am very excited to see these games,” said Josh Whitty, head coach of the Holland College men’s team.

“We look forward to bringing the classic to Charlottetown, and making it an annual must-see event. It’s a great time of year to get families out to watch excellent high school basketball and potentially see future Hurricane and Panther student-athletes.”
