The accolades keep rolling in for Deontay (D.J.) Smith.
The UPEI guard was named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rookie of the year Wednesday.
He is the first UPEI men’s basketball player ever to receive the honour and only the second from the conference. Shawn Plancke was named the nation’s top rookie in 1992-93 while playing at Dalhousie.
Smith, a native of North Preston, N.S., finished averaged 17.3 points, 4.4 assists and seven rebound per game.
The six-foot guard will receive the Dr. Peter Mullins trophy Saturday at a presentation in Ottawa between the CIS national semifinals.
