X-Women beat Panthers in fourth quarter

The UPEI Panthers were outscored by 10 in the fourth quarter Saturday in Antigonish, N.S. to lose 67-61 to the St. F.X. X-Women in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball.

The Panthers were leading 54-50 heading into the quarter after scoring 25 in the third, but could only muster seven points in the fourth.

Nakita Newman led the Panthers with 15 points and nine rebounds while Laura Power had 13 and eight. Amy Gough added 10 points in the loss.

Vanessa Pickard led the X-Women with 24 points, including the team's final seven points down the stretch.

The Panthers shot a higher percentage from the floor (35.7 per cent compared to 32.9) but the X-Women had 17 more shots. UPEI turned the ball over 28 times while St. F.X. committed 16 turnovers.

The Panthers did hit 84 per cent (16-for-19) of its free throws.

UPEI falls to 3-11 eight points and is seventh in the eight-team conference.

St. F.X. (8-6) is now in tied for second with Dalhousie, two points up on Acadia after the Axewomen (10-3) lost 75-69 to Memorial Saturday night in St. John's.

Some games in the conference are worth four points and others are worth the traditional two points.

UPEI returns to home court Friday when they host the UNB Varsity Reds (2-12) in a four-point game at 6 p.m.
