Panthers beat Reds for fifth straight hoops win

Deontay Smith and Mandrez Downey led the way as the UPEI Panthers defeated the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 93-81 Saturday in university basketball action.

Downey had 29 points and Smith 28 to propel the Panthers (8-2) to their fifth straight win. The victory pulls UPEI into a tie for second place with Acadia (7-2) as each team has 20 points.

The conference-leading Cape Breton Capers (11-0) beat Acadia 93-72 Saturday.

In Fredericton, Joe Kendrick added 11 points and Jermaine Duke eight for the Panthers, who shot 42 per cent from downtown.

Geoff Doane added 12 rebounds and Smith had nine.

Terrence Brown did not play.

Will McFee scored 28 to lead the Varsity Reds (4-6).

UPEI is in Halifax next weekend to play Dalhousie Friday and Saint Mary's Saturday.
