Panthers fall to Reds in women's basketball

The University of New Brunswick closed on a 12-4 run to beat the UPEI Panthers Saturday in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action.

The host Varsity Reds led 64-63 with 4:36 to go in the fourth quarter en route to a 76-67 victory.

Claire Colborne and Laura Fowler led a balanced attack for the Reds with 13 points as five players scored double digits.

Amy Gough filled the stat sheet for the Panthers with 22 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block.

She was also 12-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Nakita Newman added 10 points off the bench.

The Panthers only shot 26.4 per cent from the floor and 9.5 per cent from behind the arc.

UNB improves to 2-9 while UPEI drops to 1-9.

The Panthers play in Halifax next weekend. They play Dalhousie Friday and Saint Mary's Saturday.
