Women's team gives country's fourth-ranked team all they can handle

Deontay Smith scored 23 and hauled in 13 rebounds Saturday as the UPEI Panthers completed the weekend sweep of the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball.

The Panthers broke open a two-point game after the first quarter by outscoring the Huskies 30-23 in the second and 20-8 in the third en route to a 92-72 victory.

UPEI has won four straight to improve to 7-2 and is in third place in the conference standings. SMU has lost seven straight to fall to 2-7.

Brian Ofori added 15 and eight boards off the bench for UPEI while Geoff Doane and Mandrez Downey had 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Riley Halpin led the Huskies with 15 points.

The Panthers are in Fredericton next Saturday to play the UNB Varsity Reds and don’t return home until Feb. 8 when they host the Reds.

 

 

 

Women

The Panthers lost their sixth straight and second in as many days to the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The Panthers battled the country’s fourth-ranked team hard for four quarters but lost 60-52. The Panthers held a one-point lead at the half, but were outscored in the third and fourth quarters.

The Panthers did a good job converting from the free-throw line, they just didn’t do a good enough job of getting there. The Panthers were 7-of-9 while the Huskies were 20-of-29.

UPEI did connect on 44 per cent of its 16 shots from behind the arc for 21 of its 52 points.

Saint Mary’s improves to 9-0 and is atop the conference standings.

Julia McKenna had 10 points to lead the Panthers while Jenna Jones had nine and Nakita Newman eight.

Justine Colley, the nation’s leading scorer, led the Huskies with 15 while Laura Langille had 12.
