SUMMERSIDE — Guard Al Stewart made Summerside Storm history on Friday night.

Stewart became the all-time scoring leader for the National Basketball League of Canada franchise, which is in its second year of operation.

“I wasn’t aware of it (record),” said Stewart, who went on to say with a laugh, “I’m going to try and keep it going a little bit, and make it hard to reach me now!”

It was Stewart’s fifth successful free throw of the night with 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter that moved him past Mike Williams into the team record books. Stewart later scored off a steal with six seconds left to finish the game with 21 points in the Storm’s 102-92 victory over the Windsor Express.

“When I sit down and think about it, it’s really somewhat of a big deal,” admitted Stewart. “To be the No. 1 leading scorer for this franchise, it means the hard work I’ve been doing has paid off.”

Stewart, who also serves as team captain, has scored 593 points since joining the Storm for last season. Williams, who did not return for a second year with the Storm, scored 590 points last season.

“I’m more focused on trying to get my assists up, and as far as points I take them as they come,” said Stewart. “I don’t really try to get a lot of points on the board as I try to get my teammates involved.”

The 29-year-old Stewart is from Chicago and attended Drake University.
