UPEI women hoop team plays SMU today in Halifax

Jenna Jones had 23 points and Nakita Newman had 22 to lead the UPEI Panthers to an 85-81 victory over the St. F.X. X-Women Saturday in university basketball action.

The win was the first for rookie head coach Greg Gould.

Jone and Newman each had four three-pointers to help the visitors to a 40 per cent shooting from behind the arc. The Panthers shot 90 per cent from the line in the first half, but fell to 40 per cent in the second half.

The Panthers (1-2) won the first, second and fourth quarters, but dropped the third by 14.

Danielle MacDonald had 12 points while Amy Gough added 11 and seven boards for the Panthers.

Kolbi Roper had 21 to lead the X-Women (1-2).

The women play Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Halifax against Saint Mary’s.
