AUS basketball: Stammberger helps Dal sweep UPEI

The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the UPEI Panthers for the second day in a row here at the UPEI Sports Centre on Saturday afternoon.

After a season-opening 72-64 victory on Friday night, the Tigers came back to post a 73-67 decision to start the Atlantic University Sport Women’s Basketball Conference 2-0.

Keisha Brown’s 18 points led the way offensively for the Tigers, who received a 16-point effort from sophomore Tessa Stammberger of Kensington. Stammberger contributed 14 points in Friday’s victory.

Dalhousie rookie Madison Tompkins of Summerside went pointless and hauled down one defensive rebound in seven minutes of action off the bench.

For the Panthers, Nakita Newman sank a game-high 23 points. Danielle MacDonald (15) and Katelynn Donahue (10) were the other top scorers for UPEI (0-2).

The Panthers led 35-34 at halftime.

Kensington native Anna Pendergast-Stammberger of Kensington coaches the Tigers.

UPEI men 2-0

In men’s action, the Panthers used a big third quarter to defeat the Tigers 89-82. UPEI opened the regular season with a 99-81 win over Dalhousie on Friday night.

Geoff Doane’s 26 points led the way for the Panthers while Simon Marr was Dalhousie’s top scorer with 14.
