A former Ontario University Athletics west all-rookie team member will play for the UPEI Panthers hoops team this season.

The school announced Friday guard Darcy Zinck was transferring from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.

The five-foot-nine Halifax native started during her rookie year in 2010-11 and missed the entire 2011-12 season after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in preseason.

“UPEI was a school that was within my top choices coming out of high school not only based on their strong academics but the fact that they were a young developing basketball team,” Zinck said. “I’m really looking forward to the fact that the core of the team is within one or two years of me, and that I will get to spend my four years with such a great group of girls.”

Panthers coach Carly Clarke said Zinck has great experience on winning programs.

“Darcy has had the opportunity to be a part of very successful programs, and has experience and leadership qualities that should help take us to the next level.  She has a tremendous work ethic, and understands what it will take for us to achieve our goals.”

Zinck was a member of the Citadel Pheonix, which won the 2010 Nova Scotia high school provincial championship, and was a starter on the Nova Scotia Canada Games team that competed in Summerside in 2009.
