Southside sweeps Belfast to win junior C title
CRAPAUD – The Southside Lynx made it two in a row on Friday night.
The Lynx defeated the Belfast Sabres 5-3 to complete a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven championship series, and win back-to-back Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League championships. It also marked the second year the Lynx and Sabres have met in the final.
Southside will now represent P.E.I. at the Maritime-Hockey North junior C championships in Fredericton, N.B., from March 30 to April 3.
The Lynx went into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed after finishing first atop the regular-season standings at 20-6-2 (won-lost-overtime losses). The Lynx actually finished tied with the Sabres (19-5-4) with 42 points, but held the tiebreaker. Southside, which had a quarter-final round bye and swept the Tignish Aces in a best-of-five semifinal series, completed the post-season with a perfect 7-0 record. As the No. 2 seed Belfast also had a bye into the semifinals, where they defeated the Sherwood-Parkdale Metros in four games.
The difference in the series-clincher, played at the Belfast Recreation Centre, was two unanswered goals in the opening 20 minutes by the Lynx, who held period leads of 2-0 and 4-2.
Offensively, Ryan Beckingham (2), Joel MacIsaac (1-1), Cody Miller and Jake Larsen found the back of the net for the Crapaud-based Lynx. Blake MacKenzie, Brandon Green, Colton Dawson and Joe Donelle contributed helpers.
Brett Driscoll (2) and Matthew Glover replied for the Sabres. Tanner Power (2), Logan Aylward and Curtis Martell set up the goals.
Sean MacPhee earned the goaltending win, and Bed Ladner was in between the pipes for Belfast. Overall, Southside held a slim 35-34 shots-on-goal advantage.
