Defending champions down Montague 6-2

KENSINGTON – Easton Smith held the hot hand for the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers on Sunday night.

Smith netted a hat trick and added an assist while Brian Kelly chipped in with three helpers to lead the Vipers past the Montague Maniacs 6-2 in the opening game of the best-of-seven semifinal series in the Island Junior Hockey League. Game 2 is in Souris on Thursday at 8 p.m.

At Community Gardens, Ben Keefe (1-1), Spencer McAllister (1-1) and Spencer Sherren also scored for the defending-champion Vipers, who held period leads of 4-1 and 4-2. Jacob Stewart, Zach Kennific and Tanner McGuigan added single helpers.

For the Maniacs, Mark Burke and Matt Cox found the back of the net, with Adam Carle and Logan Toole assisting.

Grant Grady earned the goaltending win over Pat St-Onge.
