UNB defeated the UPEI Panthers 4-1 tonight in Game 1 of the Atlantic University Sport men's hockey semifinal.

Francis Beauvillier put UNB up 3-1 at 3:17, from Jordan Murray and Chris Clapperton and then scored again, into an empty net, at 19:36. Rob Mignardi picked up the lone assist on the empty netter.

UNB outshot the Panthers 44-21.

UNB leads the men's hockey Panthers 2-1 after two periods in Fredericton.

Philippe Maillet put UNB back on top at 8:51 on the power play, assisted by Jordan Murray and Chris Clapperton.

UNB has outshot UPEI 36-13 through two periods.


UNB and UPEI are tied 1-1 after one period of play.

Cameron Brace gave UNB a 1-0 lead at 6:02 of the first period, with assists on the goal going to Philippe Halley and Matt Petgrace.

The Panthers tied it up at 9:36 on a goal by Sam Aulie, from Beni Berisha.

UNB outshot UPEI 17-7 in the first period.


The UNB Varsity Reds, playing for the first time in 13 days, are looking to pick up where they left off.

The V-Reds ended the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey conference regular season on a 14-game winning streak.

Tonight, they’re facing the upstart UPEI Panthers in Game 1 of the best-of-five AUS semifinal at the Aitken University Centre.

The sixth-place Panthers finished three games below .500 but swept the third-place Acadia Axemen, winning 6-3 in Wolfville and 4-3 in overtime on the Island.

UPEI fifth-year veteran Mavric Park is up against UNB rookie Etienne Marcoux in net.

The V-Reds outscored the Panthers 18-6 in sweeping the four-game season series.

UNB scratches include defenceman Randy Gazzola, a second-team all-Canadian as a rookie last season, and forwards Peter Trainor, Chris Caissy and one more to come after the pre-game warmup. Caissy had 23 points in 24 games playing on a line with Francis Beauvillier and Rob Mignardi.

The Panthers are dressing the same 17 skaters - one shy of the maximum - who played in the Acadia series.
