It is ruled Amherst used ineligible player

TRURO, N.S. – The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals picked up an unexpected win without playing over the weekend.

The MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) issued a media release on Saturday evening explaining the result of the Jan. 23 game between the Caps and Amherst Ramblers has been revoked. The host Ramblers won the game 6-2, but it was discovered that Amherst used an ineligible player.

As a result, the Caps have been awarded the two points.

MHL president Dave Ritcey told the Journal Pioneer on Sunday that the player was ruled ineligible due to proper paperwork not being completed.

“It was discovered through both the branch in Nova Scotia and the league followed up suit,” said Ritcey. “When the league decided to investigate a little bit more, then the branch obviously had to deal with it because we don’t deal with player cards. That’s a branch and Hockey Canada thing.”

Ritcey acknowledged it was an honest mistake by the Ramblers, and the MHL followed a Hockey Canada regulation in its decision.

“In fairness to everyone, everybody was on the up and up,” said Ritcey, who confirmed no other discipline was levied against the Ramblers.

The Caps’ record is now 26-11-1-1 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses), good enough for second in the Eastlink North Division and overall standings in the 12-team league.

The Caps are three points behind the first-place Woodstock Slammers (26-7-4-1), and five in front of the third-place Dieppe Commandos (24-11-1-0).

Amherst is 13-23-0-1 and 13 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastlink South Division.

This week

The Caps play three key divisional games this week, starting with a game at Dieppe on Wednesday. The Caps host Miramichi (21-14-0-2) on Thursday and visit Campbellton (20-12-5-1) on Friday.
