Boston Leier scored the shootout winner Friday as the Acadia Axemen defeated the UPEI Panthers 2-1 in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey action.

The game was scoreless after the first two periods at MacLauchlan Arena.

Chad Labelle opened the scoring at 6:56 with assists to Marcus Power and Brent Andrews.

Mike Cazzola tied it 1:22 later on a delayed penalty. Leier and Brett Cote had the assists.

Brandon Glover made 22 saves for the win while Matt Mahalak stopped 31 in the loss.

UPEI was 0-for-6 on the power play, including four opportunities in the second period. Acadia was 0-for-1. There were 631 people in attendance for the game.

Acadia improved to 18-5-2 while UPEI (11-11-3) gains a point to pull three points ahead of Moncton for fifth place.

UPEI hosts the Saint Mary’s Huskies (15-8-2) tonight at 7 p.m. during alumni night. The Huskies lost 6-2 at UNB on Friday.

Alumni night starts this afternoon with a mini-tournament comprised of four teams of alumni players using both ice surfaces at MacLauchlan Arena. All former players will be introduced before the Huskies game.

“I find that the whole day provides an opportunity to get to know guys from different eras and when you hear the stories it feels like you are part of those eras too,” said former Panther captain John Brioux, who played for UPEI from 2001 to 2006. “Even though we played at different times we all feel very connected and have something in common.”
