Mahalak makes 53 saves, but UPEI loses 2-1 to UNB

Tyler Carroll’s shorthanded goal was the winner Friday as the UPEI Panthers lost 2-1 to the UNB Varsity Reds in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action in Fredericton, N.B.

It is the third straight game a shorthanded goal has cost the Panthers.

Cam Braes also scored for the Varsity Reds, who scored twice in the second period to take a 2-0 lead.

Ryan MacKinnon’s power-play goal 4:39 into the third cut the deficit to one. Nelson Armstrong and Marcus Power had assists.

Etienne Marcoux made 26 saves for the win while Matt Mahalak stopped 53 shots in the loss.

UPEI was 1-for-5 on the power play while UNB was 0-for-5.

UNB improved to 18-3-2 while UPEI is 10-11-2 after dropping three straight games. The Panthers play at the St. Thomas Tommies (2-20-1) tonight at 7 p.m.
