Cornelia Geib scored the winner 1:39 into the third as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey conference-leading Saint Mary’s Huskies 2-1 Sunday in Halifax.
It was UPEI’s second win of the weekend, following a 1-0 shutout of Dalhousie on Saturday to end a 12-game winless streak. The Panthers improved to 4-9-3 and are two points behind Dalhousie (6-9-1) in the chase for the final playoff spot.
The Huskies are 12-4-0.
Sunday, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead 22 seconds into the second period on Mary Worndl’s unassisted goal. Ashtyn Bartlett tied it with a power-play goal four minutes later. Maggie Grimmer had the assist.
Marie Soleil Deschenes made 26 saves for the win while Rebecca Weagle sopped 13 shots in the loss.
