Baie-Comeau Draakar Guillaume Beaudry, right, defends against Charlottetown Islanders right-winger Daniel Sprong during the 2014-15 regular season.

Beaudry was in his third season with Draakar

The Charlottetown Islanders have added an experienced left-handed shot defenceman before the trade period closes for the Christmas break.

The Islanders traded its third-round pick in 2017 to Baie-Comeau for Guillaume Beaudry on Wednesday. The 19-year-old Blainville, Que., native was in his third season with the Draakar.

“It’s a safe move for us,” said Islanders general manager Grant Sonier.

“He’s a No. 4-type d-man that’s a shutdown guy, that kills penalties, blocks shots, finishes his checks, makes people pay a price to play in front of our net.”

Beaudry was part of a Draakar team that went to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League final in 2014 before losing to Val-d’Or.

Sonier described him as a stay-at-home defenceman with size and grit, similar to former Islander Guillaume Rioux-Legault.

The acquisition helps fill the minutes defenceman David Henley played in the first half. He was traded to Val-d’Or on Sunday for a first- and two second-round picks after requesting a trade to be home with his family.

Beaudry gives the Islanders four lefties again with Jonathan Duchesne, Pierre-Olivier Joseph and Andrew Smith. Smith and Joseph are both rookies.

“I think Guillaume will add some stability to our back end,” Sonier said.

He is still looking to improve the roster.

“I don’t think we’re done yet,” Sonier said. “There’s still a number of people we’ve targeted that we’d like to acquire, but those prices haven’t come down.”

The Islanders were trying to get Beaudry’s equipment transported from Baie-Comeau to Montreal and have Beaudry fly back to Charlottetown on Boxing Day in order to play Dec. 28 in Sydney, N.S.

The league’s trade window closed Wednesday and reopens on Boxing Day. Teams have until Jan. 6 to complete deals.
