Blue-liners Comeau, Sangster set up three, two goals, respectively
Keith Getson scored three goals Saturday to help the Charlottetown Islanders defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 7-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season action.
Mitchell Balmas added a pair while rookie Shawn Boudrias had a goal and two assists and Josh Shatford rounded out the scoring in Pownal.
Defenceman David Comeau had three assists, blue-liner Lucas Sangster had two and singles went to Andrew Murphy, Chris Chaddock, Jack Desroches and Dominic Reid.
Matthew Green replied for Saint John.
Guillaume Briand-Briere stopped all 15 shots he faced before turning the net over to Olivier Chalifour, who made 13 saves on 14 shots.
Alex D’Orio and Alex Bishop shared time for Saint John.
The game was tied 1-1 after one period before the Islanders tallied four times in the middle stanza.
Charlottetown was 2-for-6 on the power play and killed all four of Saint John’s man advantages. The Islanders won 44 of the 72 faceoffs.
Charlottetown’s next pre-season game is Friday at 6 p.m. in Pownal against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
After the game the Islanders released eight players and now has 30 guys in camp.
Cuts were forwards Shatford, Austin Taylor, Ian Drysdale and Elio Di Meo, defencemen Jack Desroches and Andrew Murphy and goalies Guillaume Briand-Briere and Olivier Chalifour.
All were in their first camp with the Islanders, except Shatford.
“He’s an elite junior A player,” general manager Grant Sonier said. “He’s done everything we asked him to do and we continue to like Josh Shatford.”
He said all the players had good camps, now the organization will track and communicate with them during the season. It is up to the player to commit to improving as well.
“Next year, hopefully, we’re telling them they’re staying,” Sonier said.
