Charlottetown bantams tie final game of tournament

Hope Higginbothan scored the overtime winner Sunday as the Kings County Kings defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 3-2 in the bronze-medal game at the Atlantic midget female hockey championship in Deer Lake, N.L.

Amanda Gormley and Chloe MacKinnon scored in regulation for the Kings while Emily Brothers was the winning goalie. Maria Clinton was named the tournament’s top forward.

The Kings split game their Saturday games, losing 3-2 to Nova Scotia and defeating the Newfoundland champs 2-1 to finish the round robin 2-2.

Moncton won the championship game and will play at the Esso Cup national championship in Stoney Creek, Ont.

Bantam AAA

The Charlottetown Abbies tied the host Mount Pearl, N.L., team 3-3 Saturday to finish the Irving Oil Challenge Cup bantam AAA hockey tournament 0-3-1.

Kallum Muirhead was the Abbies player of the game in Saturday’s contest.

Nova Scotia’s Bubba Ray’s Gulls defeated the Moncton Hawks 3-2 in the final.
