Red Wings eliminate Hurricanes from junior hockey playoffs

ABRAM-VILLAGE — The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings are moving on in the Island Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Jeremy Balderston scored at 8:10 of the second overtime period to give the Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the Holland College Hurricanes on Sunday night to cap a three-game sweep in the best-of-five  quarter-final series. The Red Wings won Game 2 in Charlottetown 5-3 on Saturday night.

The Red Wings will now face the defending-champion Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers in the best-of-seven semifinal series that is expected to start at Community Gardens this week. The Red Wings and Vipers have met in the league final the last two years.


Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 2 (OT)

At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, the Red Wings killed off a lengthy Hurricanes’ power play, which included a two-man advantage for part of it, late in the third that carried over into overtime.

Blake Ozon and Brett Adams also scored for the Red Wings, who received assists from Brandon Adams (2), Lucas Matthews, Jarrett McRae and Colton Gallant.

Dalton MacDonald and Johnny Richards replied for the Hurricanes. Nick MacDonald, Curtis Hall, Jordan Gallant and Pat Cummiskey collected assists.

The Hurricanes held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1.

Chris Gallant earned the goaltending win, and Matt Derry was the goaltender of record for the Hurricanes. Overall, the Hurricanes held a 52-45 shots-on-goal advantage, although the Red Wings held a 14-7 cushion in overtime.


Red Wings 5, Hurricanes 3

At Simmons Sport Centre, the Red Wings’ win in Game 2 was keyed by four second-period goals.

Balderston and Curtis Martell each scored twice to lead the Red Wings. Travis Thibideau added a single goal while assists went to Tayler Smith, Matt Kelly, Fidan Feta and Lucas Matthews.

Cummiskey (1-2), Hall (1-1) and MacDonald replied for the Hurricanes. Richards (2) and JP Provencher added helpers.

Gallant turned in a 46-save effort in earning the goaltending win. Derry stopped 49 of 54 shots for the Hurricanes.

Referee Mike Annear called 11 minors, one fighting major and one game misconduct against the Red Wings.

The Hurricanes picked up six minors, one checking-to-the-head major, one fighting major  and two game misconducts.
