KENSINGTON — The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers have clinched first place in the Island Junior Hockey League regular season.
The Vipers defeated the second-place Montague Maniacs 5-2 on Sunday night, 24 hours after outlasting the Holland College Hurricanes 7-6.
The two wins put the Vipers at 24-4-0 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses), good enough for a six-point lead over the Maniacs (20-7-2).
Even if the Vipers were to lose their final four games and Montague was to win its last three, Kensington still holds the first tiebreaker — better record between the tied teams.
Before a big crowd at Community Gardens, Brett Doiron (2), Jeremy Jollimore (1-1), Logan Garnhum and Spencer Montgomery scored for the hometown Vipers, who built period leads of 1-0 and 4-1. Zen Hamil (3), Morgan Walker, Jordan Mayhew and Kyle Doucette chipped in with assists.
Matt Myers netted both Montague goals.
Grant Grady recorded the goaltending win over Tyler Whiffen.
Referee Tim Hamel called 10 of 18 minor penalties against the Vipers. Each team also picked up two fighting majors and two game misconducts.
