Hat tricks have their own lore in hockey. So do losing streaks.

Sunday's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game in Charlottetown had both as Michael Joly's three goals led the Rimouski Océanic to a 5–3 win over the Charlottetown Islanders – the team's 12th straight loss.

Joly scored the eventual game-winning goal 4:45 into the third period and snapped a 3–3 tie, then potted an insurance marker 10 minutes later for his 35th goal of the season.

Jimmy Oligny, the former P.E.I. Rocket defenceman, drew an assist on Joly's third goal. Oligny, 20, was traded to the Quebec club in the off–season.

“He's a guy that scores a lot. We tried to get him his third of the game,” said Oligny, who has five goals and 27 points in 47 games this season. “It was good being back, good to get the win. Three (games) in three (nights) for us, same as Charlottetown. We played a good road game, chipped the puck along the boards and stuff.”

Sébastien Sylvestre and Jan Kostalek had the other Océanic goals in front of 2,489 fans at Eastlink Centre.

Alexis Louiseau had three assists while Anthony DeLuca and Peter Trainor each chipped in two helpers.

Spenser Cobbold (1–1), Alexandre Goulet and Julien Avon had the goals for the Islanders, which fell to 17–33–1–4 and 15th overall and sit just two points ahead of the last-place Sherbrooke Phoenix as the playoffs loom.

As for the playoffs, Rimouski (32–15–3–4) has clinched a spot, and Oligny likes his fifth-overall team's chances in the post–season, just 14 games away.

“I'm sure we can make a long run, but we have to play together, get all our elements together,” he said.

Charlottetown led 2–1 after the first period. The game was tied 3–3 at the second intermission.

Rimouski outshot the Islanders 48–27, including 23–9 in the second and 18–8 in the third.

So kudos for Isles goalie Mason MacDonald, who kept his team in the game, but suffered the loss (5–13–0–1). Philippe Desrosier made 14 saves for the win in relief of Olivier Tremblay, who allowed three goals on 13 shots in 34 minutes.

Next up Charlottetown hosts the Moncton Wildcats (29–25–0–2) on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. at Eastlink Centre.
