Germany loses first game to host Russians in hockey

UPEI Panthers defenceman Anja Weiser assisted on Germany’s lone goal Sunday in a 4-1 loss to the Russians at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The 22-year-old defenceman assisted on Franziska Busch’s goal 6:48 into the second period in Germany’s first hockey game of the Olympics. Weisser played 20 minutes and also had a two-minute interference penalty during the contest.

The score was tied 0-0 after the first period and the Germans led 1-0 heading to the third. The Russians outshot the Germans 17-1 in the final frame and 37-15 for the game.

Germany plays Sweden on Monday at 6 a.m. Atlantic in group B action. Sweden beat Japan 1-0 on Saturday.
